VVHS partners with Pets for Patriots program

The Verde Valley Humane Society is a proud partner of the Pets for Patriots program, which matches overlooked and hard-to-place shelter animals with veterans. While adopted pets bring both emotional and physical benefits to any family, adoption can especially help ease the stress of a transition when a service member returns from deployment or retires. This nationwide program makes pet adoption more affordable for veterans and military families.

“A pet dog helps vets make a successful transition back to civilian life, especially those vets who saw combat,” VVHS Board Member Don Dickinson said. “Dogs have a presence in many military settings. There is something about the friendship of a dog that provides emotional and physical support, especially for veterans who do not return to a wife and family. They increase socialization and widen a sense of community through fellow dog lovers. The unconditional acceptance of the animal is a positive result of taking responsibility for its health and welfare. Plus, it’s just cool to have a ‘buddy.’”

Our most overlooked dogs eligible for this program are Butch and Scrunchie, both larger dogs that have been at the shelter for over two years, nearing three. Hercules, another eligible dog, has been at the shelter for almost two years.

To qualify for the program, a dog or cat must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Has been at the shelter for over six months
  • Weighs over 40 pounds
  • Is at least 2 years old
  • Has special needs [e.g., birth defect, disability, or chronic medical condition]

Meet our Pets for Patriots eligible dogs below:

  • Butch: Butch has been waiting for his future family since October 2023. He’s not in a hurry, but he’s hopeful. He’s been waiting longer than he should have to — but you’d never know it by meeting him. About 50 pounds, Butch is always up for an adventure but also appreciates a sunny spot in the yard. He can still be found with a toy in his mouth or happily chasing lizards.
  • Scrunchie: 60-pound Scrunchie loves affection as much as he loves to play. He’s a high-energy guy looking for lots of exercise and attention, especially after spending two years at the shelter. He enjoys a good run and a fenced-in yard is on his wish list. Scrunchie is looking forward to meeting any potential dog siblings who can join in on his playtime, but at the end of the day he loves showering people with snuggles and love.
  • Hercules: This medium-sized youngster has been at the shelter since December 2024 and is searching for a family that can keep up with his playful spirit. Hercules would thrive with a yard where he can run, romp and let his personality shine. This loyal, fun-loving sidekick will keep you on your toes with his energetic side, but is also content with some cuddles on the couch.
