Loss to Badgers ends Mingus season

Senior Orlando Machado was the third-leading rusher in Division III, Section IV, running for nearly 800 yards in only seven games this season for Mingus Union High School. Like he did in a 35-27 loss at Prescott High School, Machado makes the Coconino High School defender work for the tackle in his final home game. Juniors Tristan Clark and Jesus Garcia will try to fill Machado's shoes next season.

Mingus Union High School’s football postseason hopes all came down to one shot into the end zone Halloween night.

A trick pass from senior wide receiver Herb Tiffany that could have sent the game to overtime was tipped away in the end zone Friday, Oct. 31.

“They played it well,” Head Coach Bob Young said. “We got them in man-to-man coverage. All we can ask for is to have a shot at the end of the game. It was a great game — a fun game to be a part of.”

MUHS [5-5 overall, 4-2 section] had 17 more first downs, half the penalty yardage and over 12 minutes more time of possession than Prescott, but two interceptions of junior quarterback Jordan Upham and a 22-yard recovery of his fumble to cap the Badgers’ 20-0 run in the third quarter made the difference.

“Right now, Prescott and Bradshaw, they’re better than us,” Young said of the section winners from Bradshaw Mountain High School. “They’ve got bigger numbers than us.”

The 35-27 loss dropped the Marauders to a final Division III ranking of 23rd and third place in Section IV.

“I told the guys coming back, this should motivate them to commit the time they need to in the weight room next year,” Young said.
