A juvenile girl was kidnapped by an unidentified man at gunpoint in a Cottonwood business parking lot near the intersection of State Route 89A and 12th Street on May 20, according to the Cottonwood Police Department. The incident has since fueled social media claims of a second unreported attack — allegations authorities say they have investigated but cannot verify.
“The victim was forced to drive the male suspect around the city, and was sexually assaulted,” CPD stated. “The suspect eventually fled on foot, after which the victim and her family contacted 911.”
CPD is looking for a white male suspect, approximately 50 years old, with a thin build, who was wearing a camouflage jacket or hoodie, gray jean-like shorts with a mask covering his face.
“Due to the sensitivity of the incident, we do not have any further information to provide at this time,” Sgt. Ryan Gibson wrote. CPD “has dedicated all of our available resources towards this investigation and will provide further information and updates when available and appropriate.”
“CPD is aware of the online message alleging another unreported attack,” Gibson later wrote. “We have made multiple attempts to verify the validity of the message, to include contacting citizens within the chats and contacting surrounding law enforcement agencies. As of this time we have been unable to verify the information and have no evidence of another victim.”
CPD is asking for anyone that may have information about this case to contact 928-634-4246 ext. 2245. Information may also be reported to Yavapai Silent Witness at 800-932-3232.
