Camp Verde Middle School survived a 15-2 fourth quarter comeback to advance to the championship of the Verde Valley League girls basketball tournament, but that was as far as either Cowboys basketball team would advance in the postseason Saturday, Jan. 31.

Neither team could match the firepower of Big Park Community School, as the girls fell, 38-24, in the title game at Beaver Creek School, while the boys could only muster 23 points in a 13-point semifinal loss to the Coyotes.

Head coach Donnie Shanks’ Cowboys would then lose their second straight game at Cottonwood Middle School, a five-point defeat to West Sedona School, to take home a fourth-place trophy from the boys tournament.

“The boys played great until one of my players walked off the court in the middle of the game,” he said. “Then we kind of got selfish and babyish and mad about the calls. Mentally, that took them out of the game.”
