Second-teamer Zeid tops soccer honors

Senior Melissa Zeid received second-team all-Division IV honors as a forward and midfielder at Camp Verde High School. Zeid has been playing soccer since she was 6 years old, but will focus on academics in college, pursuing a dual degree in English and business, aiming to be a grant writer for nonprofits.

Nine Camp Verde High School girls soccer players left a permanent impression in the 2014 record books, as second-team all-Division IV selection Melissa Zeid led them a final time in postseason recognition.

“Excited isn’t a good enough word,” Zeid described her feelings about the honor. “I wanted all-Division so bad. My goal going into the season was just to make the team.”

Fellow seniors Emma Ehresmann and Evelynn Paniagua-Villa, along with junior Lucy Showers and sophomores Raiven Alvey and Jessie Janes, joined Zeid as first-team all-Section II selections from the fall season — one that began for the Cowboys as it would end, with a 5-1 loss to fall Division IV champion Blue Ridge High School.

“We were the only team to score on them their whole run,” said Pat Allen, Cowboys head coach. “This was an amazing team, the season through.”

But victories over rival St. Johns High School and 3-2 and 3-1 losses this season to Desert Christian High School remain CVHS career highlights for Zeid — whose five sectional co-honorees, as well as junior Paige Church, also received honorable mention all-Division honors.
