Boys triumph, girls lose in battle to make state

Camp Verde High School’s boys and girls soccer teams’ 2012 regular seasons are almost at the end, and now it has become a fight for playoff spots.

Both teams played at home Saturday, Oct. 13, with the boys [7-6-4] pulling a 5-1 victory over the Northland Preparatory Academy Spartans [5-7-1] and the girls [6-9-1] losing to the River Valley Dust Devils [6-2-1] in double overtime, 3-1, in a conference match.

The boys team played first and the Cowboys defense — Jake Zeid, L.J. Teague and Jose Casillas — came out strong from the first second. Goalkeeper Andy Woodward also showed how defensively powerful he is by blocking shots and jumping on the ball at the right time.

At 31:44 in the first half, senior captain Justin Ray scored Camp Verde’s first goal, assisted by Luis Cruz. Not one defender was around, and the ball hit the middle of the net.

Five minutes and 29 seconds later, Cowboy Chasyn Honea took the ball downfield and scored from the right corner, about 15 yards out, making the score 2-0, Cowboys.
