Mingus offense and defense crush Eagles

The Marauders stalwart defense and explosive offensive rush play gave them a solid victory over one of the team’s rivals on Homecoming night.

The Mingus Union High School Marauders [3-1] protected their ship against the Flagstaff Eagles [2-2] Friday night, beating them 41-13.

The two teams were evenly matched coming into the game. Both had a 2-1 record and powerful defenses. Flagstaff is known to focus more on a passing game, while Mingus Union notoriously runs the ball. Put that all together and it was bound to be a good game.

Mingus also had some key weapons back on the gridiron that gave the Marauders an edge: Lineman Jordan Welborn, receivers Jesse Morones and Andrew Garcia and defensive back Eric Pierce all returned for Friday night’s game.

Mingus Union took the lead within the first three minutes of the game. On the Marauders’ opening drive, quarterback Luke Simmons marched his offense down the field with big gains, and tailback Tyler Herndon dove on top of the pylon for a 34-yard touchdown run, his first touchdown of his senior year.
