Council may OK library contract

Published:

The Camp Verde Town Council may give final approval this week and award a construction bid for a new community library.

The project has been in the works for years and has hit a few hiccups along the way.

If all had gone as planned, the new library might have already been under construction. The town had to delay progress, however, when none of the bids that were initially submitted were acceptable.

The decision is on the agenda for this week’s Town Council meeting, set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 7, 473 S. Main St., Room 106.

Initial plans had called for financing for a 17,000 square-foot building with two stories. The plans have been designed by local architect Joel Westervelt. The new library will eventually be built near the site of the current library off of Blackbridge Loop Road. That in itself was an issue of some contention that had many residents divided over the years.

The town had to rework the plans in order to get something built that can be done within the parameters set by the town. The town in October secured $4.9 million in financing to help cover the project. The current plan up for consideration this week would spend no more $4.1 million to build the new library. That’s around $3.43 million for the library, according to a report from the Camp Verde Public Works Department, along with other funds that had been previously raised.
