Alcohol is now allowed at Clarkdale’s TAPCO Verde River access point, although other rules governing glass containers and behavior still apply.
The Clarkdale Town Council voted 3-2 to allow alcohol use at the site given that other locations along the river haven’t experienced many problems because of drinking.
Trash was a concern, but there is no evidence that beer cans or other related items are more prevalent than other types of trash and garbage left along the river and in the wilderness.
Mayor Doug Von Gausig said that in his experience on several river trips, people like to drink alcohol but have acted responsibly.
“Typically the river runners like to have a nice party at night,” Von Gausig said. “But they are really conscious of trash and leaving no trace.”
