Council repeals town food tax

Camp Verde, after receiving a petition against the idea, effectively repealed a 3 percent food tax.

The Camp Verde Town Council effectively repealed a proposed food tax last week after an effort to collect signatures against it was successful.

The town could have held an election to determine the matter but consensus was that the town didn’t want to spend the estimated $30,000 putting the issue to a vote, according to Mayor Charlie German.

The town currently charges no sales tax on food, like that bought at the grocery store.

Earlier this year, the Town Council approved repealing the exemption that left food tax-free. The tax was supposed to go into effect Monday, Dec. 1.

A political committee, Citizens Committed to Reducing Regulatory Burdens, was formed soon after the tax was approved and went out collecting signatures in an attempt to force a public vote on the issue or to have it repealed outright.
