Mingus linemen and rivals throw weight around

After the tire-flipping relay during a Big Man competition Thursday, June 19, at Mingus Union High School, one of three Marauders teams hoist the tire on their shoulders to run down a lane, around a barrel and back again, rushing to catch up with the team from Sedona Red Rock High School.

For going on a decade, Mingus Union High School head football coach Bob Young has come up with activities to keep his offensive and defensive linemen motivated in the offseason.

A course of barrels and other obstacles, as well as team tire races Thursday, June 19, at Bright Field, were part of a Big Man competition that accomplished just that — in the process, giving the Marauders more insight on how they stack up in the trenches against cross-Valley rivals Sedona Red Rock and Camp Verde high schools.

“My thing with the linemen, I don’t care about them bulking up,” Young said. “I just want them to be strong, and I want them to be quicker.”
