Volleyball troubled by inconsistency

Published:

A lack of consistency in all facets of the game saw Camp Verde High School’s volleyball team to a 0-3 defeat [11-25, 16-25, 8-25] at home in a nonleague match to 3A Chino Valley High School on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

The Cowboys [1-7, 1-1 Central Region] showed flashes of continuity in attack and defense. But they also allowed lopsided scoring runs to the Cougars.

“We were really inconsistent. We would pass really great, get a good set, and then we just couldn’t finish it,” Cowboys head coach Britney Armstrong said. “Or we would finish it and then the ball would come back for a serve receive or a pass and we couldn’t pass it.”

Game two was the best of the three for Camp Verde. The team’s intensity was obvious; they battled in long rallies with Chino Valley and won some of them.

It was tied at 3-3 before the Cougars went on a 4-0 run. Camp Verde answered to take the lead at 9-8, and the teams traded points.

A pair of hitting errors compounded by a service ace from Chino Valley opened an 11-14 deficit for Camp Verde.

The final three points came on a miscommunication, an attacking error and a service error.

In order to become more consistent in their play, the young, relatively inexperienced players have to gain more confidence, Armstrong said, which will only come with more practice.
