Marauders ward off visiting Bradshaw

Published:

On Bright Field, following his team’s intense and hard-fought win Friday, Oct. 2, over visiting Bradshaw Mountain High School, a visibly elated Bob Young exhaled, “A battle. A real battle.”

“They have some really good athletes,” he added, “All our hard work paid off.”

Mingus Union High School defeated the Bears, 20-15, in a game the Marauders appeared to control throughout but couldn’t pull away from the feisty visitors.

Both teams entered the sectional showdown with 3-1 records.

“It may have been great to watch from the stands, but not so great on the sidelines at the end,” Young said, smiling.

It was the kind of game where the leading scorer was a kicker, as MUHS junior Trey Meyer racked up eight points on two field goals and a pair of extra points.

His 29-yarder midway through the fourth quarter gave MUHS a 20-9 lead — enough of a cushion to weather the Bears’ 20-yard touchdown pass with three minutes left.

It was the Marauders’ defense that clinched the win with a clutch stand as time expired.
