Marauders drop out of playoffs after third straight loss

Published:

The Mingus Union High School girls basketball team can only hope its game at Bradshaw Mountain High School goes better than the boys game did at home Tuesday, Jan. 20.

Sophomore Issac Escalante scored seven points but no other Marauder had more than six as MUHS fell, 43-37, to the Bears in its third straight loss.

The 28th-ranked Marauders [9-7] will fall further out of sectional and playoff contention after being seeded as high as No. 14 in Division II by the Arizona Interscholastic Association following a win Thursday, Jan. 15, at Payson High School, 44-40.

While Beery’s boys will need to win as many sectional games as they can down the stretch to be considered for a berth in the state tournament, reserved for the top 24 teams in Division II, girls head coach Dave Moncibaez is trying to get into the postseason via the sectional tournament route.

Despite their eight Division II losses, the girls [5-15] would be the final qualifier for the Section I tournament beginning Tuesday, Feb. 10 — and, like the boys team, have the opportunity to win their second sectional game Wednesday, Jan. 21, against Bradshaw Mountain.
