Defense leads Mingus soccer to fourth consecutive shutout

Published:

Senior goalkeeper Oscar Gonzalez hasn’t had much to do at Mingus Union High School boys soccer games this season.

“He doesn’t see a whole lot of shots, truthfully,” head coach Calvin Behlow said Thursday, Jan. 8, after a 3-0 home win over Scottsdale Preparatory Academy. “He came up with two huge saves in the first half, but I bet he touched two small rollers in the second half.”

Gonzalez can thank senior defenders Mikey Gilboy and Luis Gudino, who have sealed off the Marauders’ third of the field in front of their net.

“Luis is airless,” Behlow said. “He’s amazing. He’s the best one to lead by example.”

Senior Jahmol Moncibaez scored two goals for the second straight game to lead the Marauders, who captured their fourth straight shutout Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Page High School, behind a hat trick from senior midfielder Hector Zapata. Sophomore Devyn Spitzke and senior Daniel Pallares also scored in a 5-0 win that allowed Mingus to remain undefeated atop the section going into a home game with Scottsdale Christian Academy on Thursday, Jan. 15.

If the Marauders successfully complete a Saturday, Jan. 17, game at Sedona Red Rock High School in which they were up, 2-0, they can extend their Division III, Section I lead over the second-place Scorpions. Storms forced the postponement of the Dec. 13 game with 26 minutes to play despite goals by senior Miguel Gonzalez and freshman Ezekiel Behlow.
