Mingus Rams battle for and defend hoops titles

Published:

The walls of the Clarkdale-Jerome School gym are carpeted with 10 state and league basketball championship banners, which makes goal-setting easy for the boys and girls teams.

“My goal is to three-peat, and to win the Small Schools [State],” boys basketball head coach Rudy Sandoval said. “We haven’t since 2002-03, my second year here, we won. I was like, ‘This is going to be easy,’ and then never again.”

The Mingus Rams are currently working on chest passes and general ball control skills. Garrett Newman, a player on the Clarkdale-Jerome School “B” team, dribbles around Mingus Rams assistant coach Brandon Islas at practice.
