Weekend Warriors wrap wins at summer wrestling workouts

Published:

The battles at Weekend Wars may be over, but for one freshman, one sophomore and three seniors, the battle to defend Camp Verde High School’s state wrestling title is just beginning.

Wrestlers from another 37 schools and wrestling clubs from around Arizona could only behold last year’s middle school state champion at 98 pounds, Skyler Pike, along with 113-pound sophomore Hayden Uhler and seniors Ryan Allred, Matt Mejia and Alex Noone, going home from Weekend Wars victorious once again, and for the last time this year.

Of this fearsome fivesome, only Noone, who has flipped weight classes from last season with the 132-pound Mejia, has not yet won a state wrestling championship, placing fourth in February. But he was named most improved wrestler of the Wars by director and CVHS assistant wrestling coach Mario Chagolla Sr.
