Meaningful words from a father about his son, especially after the summer played by incoming Mingus Union High School freshman Tyler Kelly, youngest son to Marauders baseball and football assistant coach Pete Kelly.
Two days after returning home from the MUHS football team camp in Irvine, Calif., where he played quarterback, 14-year-old Tyler Kelly will be traveling to Sarasota, Fla., to train for the Under Armour World Series beginning Thursday, July 24.
“This week, I had the Ken Griffey World Series, but I’ll be missing that,” he said.
Then, after a two-day tournament in Pirate City — spring-training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates — the Kellys will take another two-day break before joining MUHS sophomore catcher William “Gus” Henley in Orlando, Fla., at the United States Specialty Sports Association All-American games for players ages 14 and under beginning Thursday, July 31.
“Throughout his whole career, he’s always just played at that higher level,” Pete Kelly said. “He’s always been around older kids and it’s done wonders for him. It kind of shows you what they think about Tyler, and it’s pretty exciting.”
