Camp Verde High School ended the competitive phase of its football summer by hosting a Big Man competition and seven-on-seven scrimmage Thursday, June 26.
“We’re a little deeper in the skill positions,” second-year head coach Steve Darby concluded. “Our line is the big question mark.”
While the scrimmage left Darby reassured about his options at running back, wide receiver and even quarterback, at which incoming senior Bodie Holowell is the only experienced candidate, assistant coach Tracy Tudor hopes the questions he has of at least four of his returning offensive linemen will be answered by the time the Cowboys leave their Irvine, Calif., team camp Friday, Aug. 1.
“Our linemen that will be there this year, they would’ve come out, but they’re working out of town and out of state or have some pretty bad family situations to work out,” Tudor said. “We’ve got five good starting offensive linemen — a full-fledged varsity line of top-rated, top-class kids. If we had the linemen we wanted to have out there, we would’ve won this event.”
Incoming senior linemen Curtis Corder and Eduardo Mora and sophomore 190-pound guard Reyes Herrera were among the returning Cowboys linemen who did not participate in the final Big Man competition at CVHS, leaving Tudor to fill their spots with four freshmen — Bryce Garcia, Rafael Gonzales, Raul Urbina and Isaiah Stanley.
