Soccer wraps month of friendlies at Payson

Published:

Soccer season in the Verde Valley always begins the earliest at Camp Verde High School.

So head boys coach Dave Miller prepares accordingly, scheduling four Friday friendlies in June alone — the last one to be played Friday, June 27, at
6 p.m. at Payson High School.

“They’re more of a controlled practice than anything else,” he said after the Cowboys were outscored at home by Mingus Union High School in the two teams’ second friendly of the summer Friday, June 20. “It was a good match.

“The guys from Mingus scored a couple more goals than us, but the one in Payson will sum up this part of the schedule. I think they’re a lot like us: They had a huge graduating class two years ago of 18 or 19 seniors. The kids will come in a little more experienced but we’re at about the same stage of development.”
