Logston wins silver for shot put at State

Published:

At the end of a season dominated by medal finishes but also 36-foot throws, Camp Verde High School junior Viola Logston threw those past approaches out the window Friday, May 9, at the Division III state track and field championships.

“To be honest, I practiced a few different ways and kind of made my own out of them,” she said. “I watched a bunch of the other throwers and tried to get their strategy down — their breathing, how low they squat, techniques like that.

“Then, it was a matter of bettering that. If I would normally throw a 35, I set it in my head, let’s get it at least to 38 next time.”

It paid her high school track career its greatest dividends yet, as Logston would throw one-quarter inch over 38 feet for a new personal record and the silver medal in the State girls shot put competition at Mesa Community College.

Logston also threw the discus 97 feet for sixth place in that competition Saturday, May 10, becoming the sole source of points for the Cowboys as they finished 21st out of 34 teams. That throw was the second-longest of her high school career in the competition.
