Mingus wins fourth game in overtime with late rally

Published:

It doesn’t matter how slowly you start when you can finish like the Mingus Union High School boys soccer team does.

The Marauders, in typical fashion, went scoreless through the first 50 minutes of their game against the Northwest Christian Crusaders on Thursday, Dec. 19, on Bright Field in Cottonwood. But a goal by senior midfielder Jahir Jacobo just over 10 minutes into the second half, followed by one from senior forward Cristian Escobar 8 minutes into overtime gave them a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Mingus [4-0] has scored only one of its 12 goals this season in the first half, something that Marauders head coach Calvin Behlow said the team is working on improving.

“We are a second-half team, we’ve come to decide,” he said. “I don’t know why we start flat-footed. We’re changing our pregame workout to hopefully get our feet moving before the bell rings, because as soon as that whistle blows we’re flat footed for a lot of the time.”
