Café preps for free Thanksgiving

Published:

For many residents, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the free dinner from Georgie’s Café.
Luckily for them, the restaurant’s owner feels the same way.

“I don’t foresee retiring anytime soon,” said Peggy Reed, who has been serving hungry Verde Valley residents on Thanksgiving Day since moving to Cottonwood more than 15 years ago to open Georgie’s at 517 N. 12th St. “I can still bark orders, by golly.”

Up until 2010, she said, the meal was paid for entirely out of her own pocket. With the rise in food prices the last three years, however, the community stepped forward to help with fundraisers like car washes and barbecues, donating $6,500 last year.
