The Camp Verde Middle School boys basketball team had their first real challenge in the 2012-2013 season. The Cowboys and the Clarkdale-Jerome Mingus Rams, both 2-0 entering the contest, went head-to- head Thursday, Nov. 29 in Camp Verde. The Cowboys took the lead in the second quarter and maintained it throughout the high-intensity game, ultimately winning 50-40 to remain undefeated.

Dion Fortune was the leading scorer for the Cowboys with 10 points. Beau Bullard and Drake Smith each scored eight points while Easton Braden had seven including a three-pointer.

Bullard, Ryan Cain and Patrick Hood were the Cowboys’ team captains. Hood, Bullard, Fortune, John Castillo and Reyes Herrera were the starters for Camp Verde.

The Mingus Rams scored the first point with a foul shot, but the Cowboys answered back with a basket by Fortune with an assist by Herrera. The Cowboys had good passing; but the Rams had a quick defense. The Mingus Rams stole the ball three times and were able to score four points.
