Tosca Henry wants Cottonwood to be a vibrant community

Published:

What makes you qualified to be on the council?

I have a proven track record of meaningful leadership in the Verde Valley, including currently serving on the Cottonwood City Council. I listen and I am receptive to differing viewpoints; I am not afraid to tackle the hard issues; I work hard for the city; and, I am an effective advocate for my constituents.

What makes Cottonwood great?

Cottonwood’s people make it great. We are diverse, but accepting of each other. Additionally, our variety of local businesses and beautiful outdoor recreation opportunities make Cottonwood unique for locals and tourists alike.

What would be different if you were not on the council?

Each member of council brings a different perspective and voice to the council. During this term of office, I have worked hard to inspire a vibrant community by supporting activities and education opportunities for our youth, improved streets and sidewalks, and recreation opportunities for all ages. I have advocated for transparency in local government, increased city savings/ reserves, and reduced city debt. If I were not on the council, there is the potential for a reversal in hard work that has been done during the past four years.

How will you help Cottonwood to recover from the coronavirus and resulting economic slump?

The city council can help support our local businesses through tourism and development, but it must be done while balancing health and safety concerns and common sense.

How do you hope to keep Cottonwood affordable to residents?

Cottonwood strives to provide free and/or affordable services to residents. The team at the library offers many free programs in addition to book and media offerings. The transportation department provides afford- able [sometimes free] transit for folks that need to get across town and to neighboring communities. Through outside funding initiatives, the city works to support local nonprofits to help our residents with food and housing. The Parks and Recreation department offers programs that are designed to be accessible for residents of all income levels.

Candidate Essay:

As a current elected member of the Cottonwood City Council, I serve as an advocate for Cottonwood residents.

The city needs good leadership to navigate the economic, health and social challenges that 2020 has brought. I am running for reelection to keep a common-sense approach to these challenges. If reelected, I will continue fighting to reduce city debt; focus on fiscal responsibility and sustainable economic growth; support local business; support local organizations that provide food, housing and other much-needed services for the less fortunate in our community; maintain transparency in local government; and, work to serve as a good steward for our natural resources and outdoor recreation opportunities.

I have lived in Cottonwood for over 10 years, and I am passionate about giving back to the community and helping the city carry out its mission to “inspire a vibrant community.” In addition to serving on your Cottonwood City Council, I volunteer monthly at a free legal clinic through the Old Town Mission. I am a small business owner and attorney. I am an outdoor enthusiast, and I enjoy running, hiking, biking and exploring in the Verde Valley.
