Ahoy there matties! A mysterious treasure map has been discovered, a ship is preparing to set sail, and somewhere beyond the horizon lies a fortune that could change everything.
This fall, A Troupe Of Ridiculous Thespians, at Mingus Union High School invites you to climb aboard for a thrilling adventure with “Treasure Island,” adapted in 2014 by Bryony Lavery from the 1883 legendary novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
“This classic adventure is such a joy to work on with these students. They are creating characters that even Robert Louis Stevenson would be proud to see on stage,” ATORT director James Ball said. “The stagecraft students have gone above and beyond creating the Hispaniola. Truly a fun adventure for the whole family.”
When young Jim Hawkins discovers a mysterious treasure map, her ordinary life is suddenly transformed into an extraordinary journey. She finds herself aboard the Hispaniola, sailing toward a remote island in search of buried treasure pursued by Blind Pew [Cole Castro], her quiet life with Grandma Hawkins [Sophia Hall] is upended. Jim joins the crew and sets sail toward a remote island in search of buried gold but soon discovers that the greatest danger may not be the island itself.
Among the ship’s crew is the charismatic, cunning and scheming cook Long John Silver [Jayce Lawler].
Lavery’s adaptation brings this classic story to life with humor, suspense, unforgettable characters and plenty of swashbuckling adventure. At its heart, “Treasure Island” is a coming-of-age story about courage, trust, temptation and discovering who you really are when the world around you becomes uncertain.
When young innkeeper Jim Hawkins [Sabine Briggs] discovers a mysterious map brought by haunted seafarer Billy Bones [Ultan Green] and a man with a mysterious past and plans of his own involving his mutinous pirates and Jim must navigate mutiny on the high seas with allies Doctor Livesey [Ajna Masters] and Squire Trelawney [Caleb Thompson] as Silver schemes to seize the fortune. Upon reaching the island, Jim encounters an eccentric castaway, turning the hunt for pirate captain Flint’s treasure into a desperate fight for survival. Once they reach the island, the search for treasure becomes a fight for survival as friendships are tested, alliances crumble and everyone must decide just how far they are willing to go for fortune.
This production is rated PG due to some violence, death, mutiny and stage combat. It is appropriate for most families.
