Cottonwood hunter takes world record

Published:

In July, Trophy Game Records of the World will recognize Cottonwood resident Ron Barber during an event in San Antonio, Texas. Barber, a former superintendent of the Mingus Union High School District, went to Limpopo, the northernmost province of South Africa, in April 2023 for a 10-day hunt, during which he shot an eland [Taurotragus oryx], a species of antelope, with horns that measured 370.5 centimeters, a world record. Barber said that the eland was a bull from a herd of around 25, and that he also shot seven other species of antelope while on the safari. He was assisted at the Africa Hunt Lodge by a professional hunter and park ranger named Wickus.
