Camp Verde School Board Election
There are four candidates running for three seats on the Camp Verde School District Governing Board: Incumbent Carol German and challengers Steve Gresham, Paul Hawk and Matt Jahnke.
Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5
Candidate: Paul Hawk
Age: 65
Time in Camp Verde: “I’ve been a resident of Camp Verde for 19 years.” n Background: “I am a retired business owner.”
Q: Why are you qualified to serve on the board?
A: “Being an owner of four successful businesses in the past, I believe I have the knowledge and skills to help our school district to continue to run efficiently and effectively. Having served on several church boards in my past, I work well with others and can respond to the needs of others.
“Being in business, one always needs to find solutions to issues and problems as they arise; you can’t put them off. I found tackling problems quickly usually prevents the problems from growing. My wife of 44 years and I have three children who are succeeding on their own and five grandchildren. Putting our kids first has always been the highest priority for me. The well being and success of the students in the school district will also be a high priority.”
Q; What are three specific items or policies that you are running on?
A: “If you are reading this newspaper, you are probably reading other news and watching news on TV. This means you should be aware of all the different things that are going on in the world that will affect our children’s lives in a negative way. One of my goals as a school board member is to protect students from outside influences that would distract them from receiving a good education.
“Another item of importance is to help students be prepared for a successful life after graduation. I believe the shop and culinary classes are vital for a great number of students. Those types of classes give the students a step toward taking care of themselves when out on their own. The school has been working with Valley Academy for Career and Technology Education for several years, I would like to make sure that partnership continues. “The support of teachers and staff is critical to the success of a school district. Parents involvement with their child’s education is also very important.
As a member of the school Governing Board, I believe we should be a sort of liaison for teachers and parents. Making sure their voices are heard and tended to, not just heard.”
