At 9:21 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, a Camp Verde Marshal’s Office deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Ford pickup along State Route 260 in Camp Verde for a minor equipment violation.
During the traffic stop, the deputy reportedly noticed nervous behavior by the driver, later identified as Robert Morley of Phoenix. The deputy then asked for consent to search the vehicle.
Morley reportedly granted consent but allegedly made a statement about knowing he was going to jail because there was something illegal in the vehicle. Morley reportedly then advised the deputy that he was carrying gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, or GHB. Deputies located approximately 60 ounces of GHB in his vehicle.
GHB and its analogs cause euphoria, drowsiness and decreased anxiety and can cause amnesia while under the influence of the substance. Those who unknowingly consume GHB provided to them surreptitiously can become vulnerable to sexual assault, with no memory or foggy memories afterward, so GHB is colloquially known as the “date rape drug.”
After speaking further with Morley, he reportedly stated more drugs were in his hotel room. Deputies located over one pound of methamphetamine, more GHB and drug paraphernalia in the hotel room.
Morley was later booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center in Camp Verde on multiple felonies. Due to the large amount of drugs located, Partners Against Narcotics Trafficking was contacted for assistance.
