Physical altercation with driver ends in officer-involved shooting, both hospitalized

At 7:50 p.m. on Friday, April 12, a Cottonwood police officer conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of S. 12th St., Cottonwood, north of State Route 89A and south of the Cottonwood Kids Park and Verde Valley Fairgrounds.

A physical encounter reportedly took place between the officer and the sole occupant of the vehicle resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

The driver of the vehicle sustained a single gunshot wound and was transported to the Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment and remains in critical condition, according to police. The person’s name has not yet been released.

The officer, a 6-year veteran of CPD, whose named has not been released, reportedly sustained an injury and was transported by ambulance to the Verde Valley Medical Center and has since been released, police stated.

The officer-involved shooting is currently being investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
