CCFMD and VVFD approve joint management agreement

Published:

The Copper Canyon Fire & Medical District and the Verde Valley Fire District approved a joint management agreement on Thursday, Aug. 24, that will allow VVFD Fire Chief Danny Johnson to serve as fire chief for both districts.

“This collaborative initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing efficiencies for fire and emergency services within the region, leveraging Chief Johnson’s leadership and knowledge of fire districts, and fostering cooperation between the two districts,” the districts stated in a joint press release. “This partnership is set to usher in an era of cooperation and resource optimization in fire service leadership within the region.”

CCFMD Governing Board member Jenny Sabato said that she viewed the agreement as a positive step forward but will expect continuous open dialogue and feedback. She also thanked Nate Bailey for serving as interim fire chief.

CCFMD Governing Board Chairman Joshua Maxwell stated that while he believes the district is moving in the right direction, he remains concerned with a loss of identity.

Maxwell said that having a temporary fire chief helped them move in the right direction.

The agreement was approved unanimously and will take effect on Sept. 1, with an initial term of one year and an option for annual renewal.

CCFMD’s benefits include sharing resources, knowledge and costs.

CCFMD is in debt due to a $856,000 accounting error resulting from the merger of the Camp Verde Fire District and Montezuma-Rimrock Fire District, compounded by construction of a $3.5 million Cherry Creek fire station. The CCFMD received $750,000 in state funds to alleviate the financial strain.

“This collaboration is a testament to the commitment of both fire boards to preserve service delivery, promote shared expertise and maximize the utilization of available resources,” the districts’ press release stated. “The agreement underscores the districts’ united dedication to the safety and wellbeing of the communities they serve.”

The CCFMD board also discussed the rezoning of the district-owned property located on Salt Mine Road. Maxwell said that he wanted to include community input on the issue.

Sabato argued that the issue of the property has led them to a place where everyone can come together and make something positive out of it. “It’s such an excellent opportunity for the district to come together with the town and community to hear all voices,” Sabato said.

The board directed the district’s legal counsel and representatives to reach out to the town council to request a joint meeting to discuss rezoning options for the land.
