Camp Verde point guard Gonzalez talks passing strategy

Published:

With basketball season right around the corner for Camp Verde, the Cowboys are looking to build off their summer league.

After finishing last season at 10-18, the Cowboys are looking for more this season.

Cowboys point guard Abelardo Gonzalez shared his aspirations and expectations for this year.

What are your expectations for this season?

I expect consistency and a healthier team this year because we have had a few injuries
in the past. We have not had a chance to play with our full squad in a while, so hopefully that changes this year.

How did the team look in summer league?

I think we looked a lot better than in previous years. We played a lot faster than usual so we are a different team this year.

What have you improved on the most heading into the year?

I think my passing and court vision have improved ever since I was moved to point guard.

How would you describe your role on the team?

Point guard is a big job but I love that position. I have played it most of my life, so passing has always been big to me. If you can pass the ball 10 times on every offensive possession, then you should get a really good shot. Watching the ball move is really cool.

 Who is your favorite player?

My favorite player is Lebron James from the Los Angeles Lakers because he can still dominate without scoring. He can get all of his teammates involved on offense and makes sure they are in the flow of the game.

How important do you think passing is to team success?

Passing is very important, especially in regards to penetrating defenses. If you pass the ball and move with a purpose, it will open up many great shots on offense.

As the point guard, do you think the team’s ball movement starts with you?

It is not always just me that gets everyone involved on offense. Jason Collier brings the ball up the court as well and is also one of the better passers on our team. Anyone on the team can move the ball, that is what is most important for us.

How do you know when to pass or score?

You have to analyze the situation. If you are being double-teamed, it would be foolish to try and score because someone has to be open. But if the defender is giving you the lane, you have to take advantage and make the defense pay.
What is your favorite play to run?

Personally, I like running Kentucky. It is a drive-and-kick play that works pretty well for us. We like to shoot the three a lot as a team.

Why will the team be better this season?

I think we are more focused as a team than in previous seasons. We work out more and played a lot of games over the summer. Later in July we went to tournaments
out in Phoenix and faced different competition than we are used to seeing. I think that will help us immensely during the season.

Camp Verde’s home opener is Tuesday, Nov. 27, when the Cowboys host Payson High School.
Both games tipoff at 7 p.m.
