Cottonwood-Oak Creek to reopen schools Tuesday, May 1

Published:

School will reopen in the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District on Tuesday, May 1, according to a letter sent to parents the afternoon of Monday, April 30.

Schools had been closed since Thursday, April 26, when teachers joined the #RedforEd statewide teachers strike.

COCSD Superintendent Steve King wrote the district has secured “adequate staff to operate schools safely.” Transportation and food service will also resume as normal, according to the letter.

“I’d also like to take a moment to express my great thanks and appreciation to local community members; agencies and groups for stepping up to support our children in this most difficult time,” King wrote. “I also want to thank our staff including our teachers for reclaiming their voice in their advocacy for the children that we serve.”

Fourth-grade teacher Brenda Lewis, one of the informal leaders of the COCSD teachers said they expected to return Tuesday, but farlier in the afternoon on Monday, COCSD officals said it was “unknown” if schools would reopen.
