Last Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation began major construction on the new roundabout at Wilshire Road and State Route 260, causing roadway alignment changes for drivers.
The roundabout is part of ADOT’s SR 260 improvement project. Construction began earlier this year to turn the full 11-mile length of SR 260 between Camp Verde into a modern, separated four-lane highway with seven roundabout intersections, including two that ADOT expects will accommodate future development.
The Wilshire roundabout is located approximately one mile west of the Interstate 17 and SR 260 junction, providing alternate business access to the Chevron and Wendy’s shopping center, Pueblo Ridge.
According to ADOT, Wilshire Road will be closed for approxi- mately six months, during which access to the road will be temporarily relocated west of the existing intersection. Traffic accessing the south side of SR 260 will be maintained at Pueblo Ridge Road, where left turns onto SR 260 will be temporarily allowed.
At approximately this location — Pueblo Ridge — a fatal two-vehicle accident occurred Thursday, Dec. 14. According to Camp Verde Marshal’s Office Chief Administrative Assistant Darby Martin, at 2:56 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the location after the report of a serious accident.
“When officers arrived on scene, they found a passenger car had collided with a small pickup truck causing the pickup to overturn,” Martin said. “In total, three people were involved in the accident with one being confirmed deceased. Driver impairment does not seem to be a factor.”
Copper Canyon Fire and Medical Authority provided medical assistance. It is unclear whether construction along SR 260 was a factor in the accident. The accident is currently under investigation by CVMO, with assistance from Arizona Department of Public Safety.
