Despite losing 3-2 on Tuesday, April 25 at Prescott High School, the Marauders claimed the Grand Canyon Region championship. Mingus, Coconino High School and Flagstaff High School each tied with an 8-4 region record, but since Mingus has the best conference record [11-5] of the three, they claimed the title.

The No. 9 seed Marauders have the most competitive matchup on paper with No. 8 seed Thunderbird High School, to be played at 4 p.m. May 2 at Thunderbird. If they win, they will play in the quarterfinals against either No. 1 Nogales High School or No. 16 Combs High School. That game would be at 4 p.m. May 5 at the higher seed’s home field.

The team finished with a 12-6 overall record and 9-3 in Grand Canyon Region play, taking second place. Prescott High School took first with a 10-2 record, one of those losses coming at the hands of the Marauders.

Finishing in second place meant a lower seed in the state tournament. Seeded No. 12, Mingus is matched up with No. 5 Salpointe Catholic High School of Tucson, and will play at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, April 29 at Salpointe Catholic.

“They’ve got three solid really good players,” Mingus head coach John Brown said. “They’re not going to be a slouch team. I think we can hit them. They don’t have an overpowering pitcher so hopefully that will play our game.”

Brown and the team took a bus to Tucson on Friday, April 28 and will practice there.

Should the Marauders win, they will move on to play either No. 4 Apache Junction High School or No. 13 Casa Grande Union High School, to be played at the higher seed’s home field at 4 p.m., May 2.
