Middle-school boy brings unloaded gun to campus

Published:

An altercation between two students led to the discovery of an unloaded firearm on the Cottonwood Middle School campus Oct. 19.
According to CMS Principal Matthew Schumacher, the incident that occurred between the two students was precipitated by a back and forth exchange on social media, and was not the result of any bullying on campus.

“I think he brought it for self-defense,” Schumacher said Oct. 21.

In a letter to parents, the principal wrote, “After reconsideration, the student disposed of the firearm where it was recovered by school staff.

“CMS is committed to the safety and education of all our students and we want to reassure you that at no time was the firearm displayed on campus or students placed in harm’s way.”

Schumacher added that Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District administration and the Cottonwood Police Department have been involved in every step of the reporting and disciplinary process.

According to Schumacher, the COCSD Governing Board will soon be holding hearings for both students.

“I can tell you with some confidence, I wouldn’t anticipate either gentleman returning this year,” Schumacher said. “My policy is zero tolerance.”

Schumacher emphasized to parents the importance of speaking to their children about suspicions that a firearm has, or will be, brought onto campus.

Parents or community members seeking more information about the incident or the school’s policy on such conduct are encouraged to call CMS at 634-2231.
