A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting Friday, Oct. 14, in Rimrock.

The alleged shooter, a 17-year-old male from Cottonwood, was been booked at the Prescott Juvenile Detention Center on charges including murder, armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault and kidnapping.

The homicide victim has been identified as 25-year-old Jarrod Sovine Rogers.

The homicide scene was under full protective containment by Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office personnel but had not yet been searched.

Moriah Lynn Calhoun, 24, who lives in a room at a home adjacent to the home of the victim*, was interviewed off site in the early morning hours of Oct. 15 regarding the incident and determined not to be involved. According to the victim’s wife, when the alleged shooter went to the property, he went to Rogers’ home by mistake.*

Calhoun was allowed, under escort, to return to the home and retrieve personal belongings and a dog. Detectives also advised Calhoun that whatever property she took from the house would be examined by them before she left.

She was escorted into her room inside the main house where she quickly packed two bags full of personal property. At the time she was gathering items in the room, the detective could not clearly see her because of the room’s layout. Additionally, the room was littered with property.

YCSO detectives stopped Calhoun as she exited the room and upon examining contents of the bags, reportedly found the following:

  • 11 used baggies with apparent drug residue
  • 2 loaded syringes containing heroin
  • 54 mostly used syringes in a make-up bag
  • a metal box containing baggies and US currency
  • nearly 14 grams of cocaine
  • 3 snort tubes with residue
  • 1 gram of tar heroin
  • ½ gram of tar heroin in a white cup
  • drug paraphernalia including several spoons with burn marks
  • brown powered heroin in individual baggies, each marked for weight. The total heroin seized exceeded 11 grams
  • electronic scale
  • several pills

Calhoun reportedly admitted to ongoing heroin/cocaine use. Detectives stated the packaging found was indicative of drug sales. Calhoun was arrested and booked at the Yavapai County Detention Center in Camp Verde on charges including possession or use of drug paraphernalia, possession or use of a dangerous drug, possession of a dangerous drug for sale and possession of a narcotic drug for sale.

She remains in-custody on a $25,000 bond.

The shooting occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of E. Airport Drive in Rimrock. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene.

According to YCSO Media Relations Coordinator Dwight D’Evelyn, no vehicle was seen or heard. Rogers died at the scene. Rogers’ wife, who was also present at the time, was assaulted but not seriously injured.

“Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau have been on scene since early this morning to investigate,” D’Evelyn stated early on Oct. 15. “At this time, it appears the victim may have been targeted.”

By the afternoon of Oct. 15, YCSO detectives had been advised that a man was being treated at Northern Arizona Healthcare’s Verde Valley Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his leg. Detectives contacted the man, who claimed to have been shot by an unknown suspect in an unrelated incident.

“After an extensive interview, the 17-year-old suspect finally admitted he shot the victim on E. Airport Drive in Rimrock during an attempted robbery,” D’Evelyn stated. “Detectives believe the suspect may have accidentally shot himself during his confrontation with the victim, but this aspect of the investigation has not been confirmed.”

Following treatment at VVMC, the suspect was released to the custody of detectives and booked at the Prescott Juvenile Detention Center.

* This story has been updated to indicate Calhoon was not Rogers’ roommate but a neighbor in an adjacent house on the property, according to Rogers’ wife.
