Library programs heat up for summer

Magician Bret Fox came to the Camp Verde Community Library to put on a magic show for kids. Fox measured the kids’ magic power with his Magic Meter when the magic word “read” was shouted. The library has added several programs to its summer list.

Verde Valley-wide, libraries have quickly moved to redefine themselves in the 21st century, shifting their focus toward community events that promote not only reading but all varieties of learning.

A library was once a place defined by the whisper. Interactions were muted, sometimes outright discouraged. Now, however, libraries are embracing new activities, drawing in crowds for more than quiet space for a good read.

On Thursday, June 16, Camp Verde Community Library hosted local magician and funny man, Bret Fox. If you were on time for the event, you were too late. The sports-themed show attracted enough people to fill the facility to capacity.

It’s good news for the library, which will be transferring operations to its new facility early in the fall. There, Library Director Kathy Hellman hopes to increase programming even further, making use of the upgraded and expanded facility spaces.

“I feel like all these events are happening almost six months before it’s time. It’s hard to manage the types and quality of events in this space,” Hellman said of the current library. She added that she receives numerous calls each week about people interested in founding new programs, and predicted that the new facility will be “hopping from the get-go.”

Hellman said that the new library will likely open either Nov. 5 or 19.

“I’m counting on it happening before Thanksgiving. It will definitely be on a Saturday.”

In the meantime, even with limited space, Hellman and Programs and Outreach Coordinator Sebra Choe aren’t slowing down.

On Tuesday, June 28, at 6 p.m., the library hosts Ellen Griswold, a certified natural health professional who hopes to impart her knowledge about the healing properties of essential oils.
“Did you know that smell is the fastest way to affect your mood? Essential oils skillfully distilled from carefully harvested plants from around the world can have a variety of
positive health benefits,” Choe stated, but added that the content is informational, not intended to be a substitute for professional medical appraisal.

On Wednesday, July 6, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the town soccer field, the library again partners with the parks and recreation department to present a bike clinic. Bring your bike for a basic checkup by a bicycle mechanic, learn bike safety and take part in a group ride around the block.

Lastly, the library’s Summer Reading Program hosts KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do on Wednesday, July 13, at 1 p.m. in the Community Gym.

“This thrilling 45-minute self-defense class will feature performances by the KC’s Black Belts and X-Team demonstration group,” Choe stated. “The X-Team represents KC’s Hyper Live Your Life Bully Defense Programs, where they encourage all kids to respect one another no matter their differences.

“Bring the family to this all-ages workshop and try a few moves to build confidence in self-defense. Wear loose fitting clothing and bring a water bottle.”
