Man shot dead in home invasion, four arrested

On Dec. 4, at about 8:54 p.m. Cottonwood Public Safety Communications received a 9-1-1 call advising there was a shooting and the individuals involved were leaving the area in a red SUV, according to Cottonwood Police Department Cmdr. Gary Eisenga.

 Cottonnwood police have arrested four suspects, left to right, Calvin R. Clark, 28, Jermaine D. Shields, 21, Hope M. Olszewski, 20, and Karrie Ann Funkhouser, 22Cottonwood police officers responded to the 600 block of S. Second Street in regard to the shooting. Officers observed several subjects attempting to leave the area in a red SUV.

The subjects were detained while officers attempted to locate the shooting scene. Officers were directed to a home where the shooting had occurred.

Upon entry officers discovered a gunshot victim lying on the ground. The victim was transported to Verde Valley Medical Center where he was later pronounced decease, Eisenga stated. The deceased man was identified as a 27-year-old man from Goodyear. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Officers also contacted a male subject outside of the residence, bleeding from his head and had large lacerations to the back of his head. This male subject advised that he and a friend were working on a vehicle in the yard when he noticed three black males running towards him.

He and his friend ran toward the house. Upon entry into the house the black males pushed open the door and a fight ensued. During the struggle shots were fired. The male subject and his friend ran out of the residence where a red SUV, driven by a female, attempted to run them over. The male subject was later transported to VVMC for medical attention.

Suspects arrested and charged are identified as: Calvin R. Clark, 28 years of age from Goodyear, charged with aggravated assault, burglary, robbery, and murder; Jermaine D. Shields, 21 years of age from Buckeye, charged the same as Clark; Hope M. Olszewski, 20 years of age from Buckeye, charged with facilitation of burglary and aggravated assault; Karrie Ann Funkhouser, 22 years of age from Phoenix charged with aggravated assault and endangerment. This investigation is still in progress.
