Picture clears for High Desert playoffs

Published:

With a couple of coin flips and a makeup game to go in the Minors division, the playoff picture is set for High Desert Youth Football beginning Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 a.m.

That is when the Cottonwood Marauders are scheduled to kick off the postseason for High Desert Youth Football against the Camp Verde Mighty Mites team.

But since the Marauders lost a coin flip with Camp Verde, they may need to travel to Butler Park to play Oct. 23, depending upon field conditions.

The game for the Marauders, who finished fourth in the Northern Arizona Youth Football division, will be followed at 10 a.m. Oct. 24 by the Cottonwood Lobos’ matchup against sixth-place Wickenburg at CMS. The Lobos earned home field as well by finishing third in the Mighty Mites division.

The Marauders will likely play Saturday, Oct. 31, at undefeated top seed Bagdad if they advance, while the seventh-seeded Cottonwood Seahawks could meet the Lobos on Halloween in the semifinals if they dispatch the Chino Valley Cougars.

After a 1-6 regular season, the Cottonwood Wildcats begin a new season in the Majors division by traveling to Wickenburg to play at noon Oct. 23.

“We’ve had a tough season,” said head coach Jackie Bessler. “But now it could be any given Saturday.”

Wickenburg boasts both the top Majors and Minors seed, with each team having one loss.

“They’re a bit thicker than us,” Bessler said. “But they know we’re going to show up to bring it.”
