County leaders lament budget

Published:

Arizona lawmakers and Yavapai County Supervisors met in Jerome last week to touch base on legislative issues that could have an impact on the region.

Arizona Rep. Karen Fann [R-District 1], Rep. Noel Campbell [R-District 1] and Sen. Steve Pierce [R-District 1] joined Rep. Brenda Barton [R-District 6], Rep. Bob Thorpe [R-District 6] and Sen. Sylvia Allen [R-District 6] and met with the supervisors in Jerome’s Town Hall Thursday, July 30.

Some of what was on the radar of the county supervisors was the hope of possibly getting back funds that were withheld by the state during the economic recession, including revenue generated by the lottery.

There was also talk of next year’s state budget and some dissatisfaction over how the last budget process was handled.

“There was frustration last year because it seemed like the governor and the heads of the legislature were making backroom deals,” said Thomas Thurman, Yavapai County District 2 supervisor.

Thorpe said that many in the legislature were “blindsided” by the budget.

Lawmakers weren’t given that much time between seeing the proposed budget and having to vote on it, Campbell said.
