While her knee is injured enough to keep her out of competitive running for more than three months, Mingus Union High School incoming senior Penny Fenn successfully defended her title as fastest girl in the Arizona Diamondbacks Race Against Cancer last month.
“[It] will be in September — the first cross-country meet of the fall,” Fenn estimated when her return will be to competitive running will be. “I was a year farther into my training and understood the course a lot better.”
Fenn, 17, ran almost a minute faster than her 2014 time, when she got to meet first baseman Paul Goldschmidt after throwing out the first pitch before a Diamondbacks game at Chase Field.
“I wanted to redo the experience over again because I’m a huge baseball fan and the D-Backs are my favorite team,” she said. “So when it’s Arizona baseball and running, it’s perfect.”
This time around, the “incredible” thrill for the Aftershock Distance Club runner was meeting television reporter Jody Jackson after getting an autograph from Arizona manager Chip Hale before a game against the San Diego Padres.
