Quietly, Tristan Stanfield has become another Camp Verde wrestling title threat.
“He placed in a lot of tournaments last year but wasn’t a champion,” his head wrestling coach, Jeremy Uhler, recalled. “He didn’t place at State.”
As a matter of fact, before last year, Stanfield hadn’t wrestled competitively at all.
“Seeing some of my friends get into other sports to stay active made it easier,” the second-year wrestler said. “This year, though, I’m really trying.”
All of a sudden, after devoting all of his summer to football, the 180-pound eighth-grader at Camp Verde Middle School had taken home his second title in two months Dec. 4 at Yavapai County Duals.
Stanfield won his first individual title Nov. 15, joining 104-pound Korben Uhler — a Cowboys seventh-grader — as champions of the Mingus Mountain Tournament.
