CVMS girls hoops stay perfect, boys break even

Eighth-grader Hope Ontiveros keeps the Clarkdale-Jerome School guard at bay as she moves in to shoot for Camp Verde Middle School. The Cowboys girls basketball team doubled up the Mingus Rams on Dec. 16 at home to stay undefeated through the first half of their Verde Valley League schedule.

Undefeated is not only a status the Camp Verde Middle School’s girls basketball team will keep into 2015, it’s only a technicality for the Clarkdale-Jerome School boys after they were knocked off by CVMS in a tournament Saturday, Dec. 13.

The six-point win was the last for the Cowboys before winter break, though, as Clarkdale outscored CVMS 18-9 in the third quarter to avenge its six-point loss and remain undefeated in the Verde Valley League, 40-34, Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Matching the Mingus Rams’ 7-0 record in league play is the Cowboys girls team, as forward Darian Loring poured in 10 points and fellow eighth-grader Hope Ontiveros added two three-pointers Dec. 16 to double up Clarkdale, 26-13.
