Marauders face stiffest test yet at Chino Valley dual

Published:

Different faces are stepping up in different places for Mingus Union High School going into its wrestling dual Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Chino Valley High School.

“Chino’s great — I’m not going to lie,” Marauders head wrestling coach Tim McKeever said. “They’re real solid where we’re new. But we’re getting better every single day.”

Sophomore heavyweight Stephen McClanahan, 160-pound junior Trey Pettijohn and 132-pound senior Jordan Bramblett have emerged as consistent point producers for the Marauders, who rebounded Dec. 10 from just two wins at the Peaks Invitational to win three out of four duals at Camp Verde High School.

“The one guy we’re really, really happy with is Trey Pettijohn,” McKeever said. “He’s a first-year wrestler. We’re excited just to continue to watch his progress.”

In the absence of injured senior Cordell McKeever, McClanahan stepped up with three pins at the Peaks Invitational, where the 132-pound Bramblett advanced to the championship round before getting pinned by Division II state champion, senior Kyle Ford of Gila Ridge High School.

Were it not for forfeits in the 106-, 113- and 120-pound weight divisions, MUHS may have not only shut out its Dec. 10 victims, Arizona Lutheran and Greyhills academies, along with Mayer High School, but might have even challenged for the victory over the host Cowboys.
