Middle school teams build talent for titles

Zack Garcia/Larson Newspapers

Camp Verde Middle School’s boys and girls basketball teams have rallied around leaders who will need the right support from them to bring home conference and state titles.

Through two games, a couple of returning eighth-graders have set the standard for a larger body of seventh-graders to follow, with a sprinkling of sixth-graders looking to head coaches Donnie Shanks and Steve Stone for guidance in carving out “A” team experience from raw potential.

One of the new players on boys head coach Donnie Shanks' "A" team is seventh-grader Jason Collier, practicing form and accuracy as he goes in for a layup. Shanks predicts Collier will be “one of the elite point guards” in the Verde Valley Conference.
