Bulldogs winning fight greater than upcoming league games

Published:

Basketball helps South Verde High School win a struggle greater than any of its opponents on the court will present.

Boys coach Darin Smith and girls coach Courtney Haddo not only are father and daughter, they are each other’s assistants — and that means keeping all 26 of their players eligible.

“What determines their play really is their grades,” Haddo said. “We started out with a really low percentage eligible, but now it looks like we’re going to make it.”

No small victory, as last year’s Bulldogs girls basketball team could not keep enough players eligible to finish their schedule and ended up dropping out in January.

“This is the first time in at least four years South Verde’s had at least 10 [girls] to start the season,” said Haddo, a former Bulldog player herself from the Class of 2010. “There will be a lot more games for the girls this year. That’s actually motivating the girls to keep eligible: Everybody’s been going in after practice and turning in extra work.”

South Verde High School has also put together a girls basketball team. The girls team includes, back row from left, Kali Logan, Iesha Allen, Shushee Lewis, Isabel Orona and Angie Campos; and, front row from left, coach Darin Smith, Chelsea Campos, Meri Jane Pusher, Valeree Honwytewa, Naya Lewis, Evelena Taylor and head coach Courtney Haddo.
