Lobos place three in top 3 at Mingus wrestling tourney

Published:

Sixth-grader Elijah Miller went undefeated Saturday, Nov. 15, as Cottonwood Middle School finished eighth in a standing-room-only Mingus Mountain Tournament.

The 68-pound Miller pinned all five of his opponents, including Paul Kelly of Sunkist Kids — second-place finishers overall to Chandler club team Thorobred — in the first period of his championship match in the Mingus Union High School main gym.

“Elijah simply dominated,” McKean said. “He pinned his way through the tournament, including a first period pin in the finals against a returning state champion from Tempe.”

It has been a big November for Miller, who was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Grand Slam Nationals after winning the 68-pound championship at that tournament
Nov. 8.

Club teams such as Thorobred, which nearly doubled up Sunkist Kids, accounted for all but one of the teams that finished ahead of the Lobos, as St. John’s Middle School finished seventh
with 39 points.
