Gun shop unveils WWII exhibit

A collection of pristine World War II memorabilia, much of it captured by U.S. Army Rangers from Nazi soldiers is currently on display in Camp Verde. Under the care of Dave Jonas, who owns and operates a gun store in town with his wife, the future of the collection is uncertain. What is certain is that in some way, it will be made available to the public.

A local gun shop owner is looking after an impressive collection of artifacts from World War II.

Much of it is German uniforms and weapons captured by the U.S. Army’s 1st Ranger Battalion.

While most of these types of items are more often seen as reproductions on a movie set, these objects are all the real deal, said David Jonas, who runs the gun shop in part of an old adobe building in downtown Camp Verde.

The collection is also housed in the building, with uniforms set up on posts and helmets, combat knives and other items displayed on shelves and in cases.

Jonas said he came across the collection when a customer who regularly comes in the shop, Mike Altieri, happened to bring it up and was looking for a place to display part of it.

Altieri lives in the Village of Oak Creek. His father, James Altieri, served during World War II, where he was able to amass much of the items.
