Mingus runners, swimmers PR at State

Published:

Mingus Union High School’s cross-country and swimming teams had a busy Saturday, Nov. 8, busting records at State.

Senior Jordan Bramblett finished fourth in the 5K to pace the boys cross-country team to a seventh-place finish in at the Division III state cross-country meet, while junior Megan Goettl won honorable mention all-State honors in 17th place to help run the Marauders girls team to sixth in record heat on the Cave Creek Golf Course.

Bramblett earned first-team all-state with his “smart race” of 16:15, head coach Jim Bostwick said, while the top four other boys runners all had top 75 finishes — including seniors Traygon Ullery, who ran “probably his best race of the year,” and Keenan DeVore, who finished 74th.

Goettl’s 21:07 run was supported by sole girls senior Anissa Urueta, who finished 43 seconds behind her in 33rd.

“Fantastic leader for us,” Bostwick said. “[She] has had her ups and downs due to injuries and stayed positive throughout.”

Junior Maribel Cruz and sophomore Cassia Gehl also ran their “best race of the year,” Bostwick said, with top 50 finishes. Junior Victoria DuCharme gutted out the 5K through a sprained ankle to finish 45th in 22:08, despite being on crutches and in a walking boot most of the week, Bostwick said.

“So [she] was our inspiration,” he said. “Anytime [you have] a top 10 finish, you can be proud of these girls.”

Senior Leah Mount, of Mingus Union High School, left, celebrates her 50-yard freestyle win in the regional swimming championships with head coach Gretchen Wesbrock. Mount finished 20th in the event at the final swimming meet of her Marauders career, the Division II state swimming championships.

At the Division II state swim meet in Mesa, the boys and girls 200-yard freestyle relay teams swam their fastest times of the season, and juniors Justis Byrd and Caleb Furey and freshman Gunner Tillemans all set personal records in at least one event to lead the Marauders boys team to a 22nd-place finish.
